Marine fuel diversification and the requirements for scaling up shipping decarbonisation were central themes at SIBCON 2026 in Singapore, according to Alkagesta’s account of its participation. The company said its team attended industry sessions and met shipping and bunker market participants during a week of conference activity, with discussions spanning both immediate supply concerns and the sector’s longer-term fuel transition.
Alkagesta said sessions explored how biofuels, methanol and LNG could supplement conventional marine fuels across different vessel categories and trading routes. The company linked those discussions to its own expansion in sustainable fuels, citing a five-year UCO feedstock offtake agreement and a multi-year agreement for biofuel storage at Pantank in Antwerp. It presented these arrangements as part of the direction already being pursued across its trading platform.
Security of supply was another recurring subject, the company reported. Participants discussed diversification as a way to manage risk by limiting reliance on individual supply sources and strengthening operators’ resilience. Alkagesta placed those conversations against a backdrop of continuing supply pressures in global energy markets. Its account described fuel choice as both a transition issue and a practical consideration for maintaining reliable supplies to shipping operators.
The conference also examined how decarbonisation initiatives could progress beyond pilot projects into commercial operations. According to Alkagesta, industry leaders identified clearer regulation, safety frameworks and financing access as important conditions for that shift. Outside the formal sessions, the company said it met shipowners, bunker traders, customers and suppliers, maintaining established relationships while exploring opportunities for collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region.
Alkagesta’s delegation included founder and chief executive Orkhan Rustamov; Tural Huseynov, managing director for investments and asset management; Agshin Bakirzade, APAC commodity trading director; Mithat Çiftçioğlu, marine fuels distribution director; and senior marine fuel trader Afiq Salim.
